This includes memory, mood, vigilance, energy levels, reaction times and general cognitive function.

A Coffee Enema?

Coffee can be excellent when used in an enema. Enemas were used during ancient times by the Egyptians, Chinese, Babylonians, and Greeks, although it’s unlikely they contained coffee. Coffee enemas reportedly were first used during World War I, when German medics discovered that coffee was more effective than water when used as an enema to help with pain relief after surgery on wounded soldiers. The pain-reducing abilities of coffee resulted in published reports that coffee enemas helped open up the bile ducts, which facilitated the removal of waste and toxins from the body. According to the Gerson Institute, coffee enemas increase the ability of the liver to detox the body by stimulating an enzyme in the liver (glutathione-S-transferase), which helps remove free radicals (cell-damaging molecules) from the body. Coffee enemas reportedly also can increase the flow of bile.

Coffee enemas boost peristalsis, which helps eliminate material from the bowels, and also hydrate the colon, another benefit in moving stool through the bowel. For individuals with cancer, use of coffee enemas are said to help remove toxins associated with chemotherapy and the cancer itself.

What is Caffeine?

Caffeine is basically a bitter white crystalline alkaloid. It is a stimulant drug that is found in varying amounts in the seeds, leaves and fruits of some plants especially the coffee plant. Caffeine is mostly consumed in the form of an infusion, extracted from seeds of the coffee plant and leaves of a tea bush. Other sources include edibles containing products derived from the kola nut, which we have blogged about last year. Caffeine is oftenconsidered to be a harmful drug as it can be quite addictive. But, take it in the right dose can have positive effects on you and your health. The properties of caffeine temporarily ease drowsiness and can lift up your spirits. Hence, unlike other psychoactive substances, caffeine is legal and unregulated in almost all parts of the world.

Coffee, Skin and Hair Care:

Why not utilize a ‘coffee based’ oil.

Use dried beans infused into almond oil or coconut oil which can be applied to the scalp in a variety of delivery methods ranging from direct application to the scalp, pre-shampoo treatments, shampoo applications and/or rinse-out or leave-in conditioners. The coffee grounds or the infused oil can also be combined with a Shea butter, which you can buy raw from your local health food store or online. A great side benefit, used coffee grounds are known to be a great exfoliant for the scalp. So when you’ve had your morning coffee keep the grounds and add to your favourite shower gel or shower balm and use as an exfoliater. Coffee grounds are also a good treatment for helping reduce cellulite in some cases.

Use as a Conditioner:

Cold brewed filtered coffee, when used on wet hair, as an after shampoo rinse (like conditioner), will often help slow or stop skin shedding.

After shampooing, completely rinse hair. Gently squeeze excess water from hair with fingers. Pour pre-brewed cool filtered fresh ground coffee into hair. A great applicator is a recycled olive oil bottle that you have filled using a funnel. Pour the coffee into the hair. Allow to sit on hair for about 5 minutes. Rinse out or use as a leave-in conditioner. Wrap hair in stain-proof towel or cloth and allow the coffee conditioner mixture to remain on hair for 30 to 60 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and finish with a cool water to the final rinse. Cool/cold water will seal the hair scales flat down locking moisture, nutrition and bringing hydration, shine and condition to your hair. Towel blot and air dry if possible. Style as normal.
